The school was originally a boarding school for boys only and became co-ed in 1983.

Fettes College is a full boarding school with 75% of pupils boarding in the Senior School and over 20% boarding in the Prep School.  Fettes is renowned for the quality of education it provides which naturally includes superb academic results across GCSE, A-Level and IB Program.  Fettes education means so much more than academic success and skills and talents of each of our students are recognised and rewarded, whether that be in the classroom, on the sports fields, in the concert hall, on the stage or in the gallery.  We strongly believe that with expert tuition and encouragement, every student can realize their ambitions.

Fettes College has a reputation for excellent academic results, the highest level of tradition elite and prestigious school in Scotland which well-know as “Scottish Eton”.  It counts the former UK Prime Minister Tony Blair as a Former Pupil.

School Ethos

The school has a community which beliefs in mutual support and co-operation. It is important to be happy, purposeful environment that encourages the pupils to flourish their development and interests that they possess.  Being surrounded by supportive teachers and contemporaries gives the pupils more encouragement to try new skills.  The mission at Fettes is to develop broadly educated, confident and thoughtful individuals who are prepared for life after Fettes and all the opportunities and challenges it will bring.

International Scholarships

At Fettes College in Edinburgh, 100 per cent means-tested is available to any pupil who passes the entrance exam, with academic, music, art, sport and piping scholarships offered with up to ten per cent off fees. In other cases, the scholarship is honorary. Alongside its academic scholarships at 11+ and 13+

Academic Success:

Fettes is renowned for the quality of education it provides which naturally includes superb academic results across GCSE, A-Level and IB.  The students at Fettes achieved outstanding academic results.  In 2019, the combined result of A-Level and IB examinations 21% A* at A Level or 7 at IB, 56% A*/A at A Level or 7/6 at IB  and 83% A*-B at A Level or 7/6/5 at IB Program.  There are many outstanding individual achievements included among them.  

University Destination:

These results have translated into university entrance success with the majority of applicants securing their first choice institution including places at Cambridge, other leading UK universities and significant success at the top USA universities, this year including Harvard and Princeton.

Boarding and Pastoral Care for students:

As well as the strong bonds made with fellow housemates, it is the commitment and dedication of Housemasters, Housemistresses, which leave a lasting impression. They advise, help and encourage, simply being there for the students whenever needed.

It is important to continue committed to all aspects of student well-being from healthy eating and physical activity to mental health. By doing this each of the students can thrive and embrace all that a Fettes education has to offer whilst making friends for life.

There is four girls' boarding house of Arniston, College East, College West and Dalmeny.  There is also four boys' boarding house of Carrington, Glencrose, Kimmerghame and Moredun.  In their last year, pupils move to Craigleith, our Upper Sixth co-educational boarding house, where they can experience a greater degree of independence 

The boarding houses at Fettes are central to our sector-leading pastoral care. Each house is a supportive community of staff and to all aspects of student well-being from healthy eating and physical activity to mental health.  By doing this each of our students can thrive and embrace all that a Fettes education has to offer whilst making friends for life.

Extracurricular Activities:

Sport is an integral part of a healthy and active lifestyle, developing key life skills such as teamwork and communication.  In Fettes, they have over 20 sporting options, both competitively and recreationally, so that the college can find a sport they love. Specialist coaches, access to a wealth of sporting facilities, including a water-based Astro (so good that Scottish Hockey uses it for training); cricket nets; beautifully maintained pitches; a swimming pool; and a climbing wall. All the outdoor breaks in fully equipped playgrounds so that whether they like playing on the monkey bars or fun games on their very own Astro, their break times are active too.
