School Profile:
Roedean School is a independent school for girls age 11-19, which is located on the outskirts of Brighton, East Sussex, in the South-East of England. It is the first independent school for girls and one of the three traditional girls’ school with long history. It sits on a beautiful 45-acre campus, with a further 75 acres of land adjacent to the site. It takes under an hour from London on the train. Gatwick is the closest airport and the journey takes about 30 minutes by car or by train. Heathrow is over an hour away by car. The junior school was closed in 2011 as the school administration decided to focus on secondary and sixth form education. The school is inspected by Independent Schools Inspectorate in 2016 and was rated as ‘excellent’ in every area. The new principal adopted the policy to intake more international students. The school bought Moira House and made it into international department. One of the strengths of the school is that the career service, the temperament and the English proficiency are all outstanding.
Academic Success:
Roedean School aims to provide a thorough physical, intellectual and moral education with as much liberty as is consistent with safety. They wish to prepare girls for a university education and their future careers. The students achieved successes in public exams every year. In 2019, 79% of the A-Level grades are A*-B and 66% of the GCSE grades are 9-7. Over the past five years, 60% of their leavers have gone on to study at Russell Group universities, pursuing a wide range of courses. Careers and university guidance begins early in the school so that the girls begin to consider their future direction long before they need to do so. In the Sixth Form, the students have periodic careers and university guidance as part of the Lecture Programme.
University Destination:
Boarding and Pastoral Care for students:
There are four Houses in the main school, which are almost identical, as well as two Houses for girls in the Sixth Form. The Weekend Programme is full and varied. There are trips up to museums and galleries in London, sporting activities such as horse-riding and windsurfing, and pottery painting, ice-skating, and the Christmas market local to Brighton. The small size of each boarding house means that a strong connection will be very quickly developed with the other girls, as well as with the house staff. The Health Centre is available to all pupils, both day and boarding, and staffed by highly-qualified registered nurses. Visiting Doctors from the local surgery who cover two surgeries will be in the school on Mondays and Thursdays.
Extracurricular Activities:
At Roedean School, a diverse range of activities are open to the students. In addition to those found at many schools, such as Chess Club, music rehearsals, the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award, Young Enterprise, Ecology Club, and academic clinics and extension groups, the school offers more unusual activities, such as “Classics – go hard or go Homer”, Leith’s Cookery, scuba-diving and kick-boxing. Other areas of activities are also available to the students, including sports, creative arts, performing arts, Roedean Farm and Community Action.
It is notable that the school owns a 320-seat theater with make-up room, huge costumes room and props room. The student drama and music performance will take place in the theater every year. Prize giving ceremony or indoor event will use this venue as well. Apart from using the high quality school facilities, choir and orchestras always have chances to perform outside school.
