School Profile:
Shiplake College is a comparatively young independent school . It is a day and boarding school for boys aged 11 to 18 years old and girls aged 16 to 18. It is located in the south of Henley-on-Thames in Oxfordshire, building around a nineteenth-century mansion.
Academic Success:
Shiplake College aims to provide a friendly and supportive environment for students to flourish. It encourages students to realize their own and full potential, and to achieve a measure of personal success in at least one area of school life.
Its Year 9 curriculum is to ensure the boys are well-prepared to begin GCSE courses. They are encouraged to identify own strengths and skills, and select the subjects they would continue studying. As long as they begin the GCSE course, they need to study three core subjects: English, Mathematics and Science, so as four elective courses.
The school is aware of a new style of ‘reformed’ GCSE, which suggests teaching GCSE subjects in a linear fashion, with no coursework, assessment would mainly by a final examination. Students will be graded by numbers 9 to 1. Grade 9 is the top grade which can be achieved by fewer students who got the old A*; Grade 4 roughly equivalent to a C grade, which is recognized as a standard ‘Pass’. Shiplake College is considering the best curriculum design which ensures students can have the greatest chance of success at GCSE.
In the Sixth Form, the majority of students would choose to pursue three subjects. A-Level subjects and BTEC courses are all possible options to select. Students joining Year 12 will study the PULSE programme, which is meant to facilitate the academic and personal core skills in Sixth Form students. An Extended Project Qualification (EPQ), or a Certificate of Personal Effectiveness (CoPE) is part of the course. While at the end of Year 12, all students will acquire a certain number of UCAS points for university entry. Students’ academic potential and suitability for certain degree courses can be examined.
In 2019, Shiplake students achieved satisfying results. 88% of GCSE grades were awarded at 4 or above. For A-Level, 37% of students gained A*-A.
