School Profile:
Windermere School is an co-educational independent boarding and day school in Lake District in the North West of England. It has approximately 350 pupils between the ages of 3 and 18, over a third of whom are boarders.
Academic Success:
The curriculum offered at Windermere School reflects is based on exposing students to as many opportunities as possible and to grow into well-rounded individuals. The curriculum is delivered in a way that emphasises both learning and communication skills. Year 7 marks the beginning of the GCSE curriculum, with the first exams in Year 9. All students in Years 10 and 11 study mathematics, English language, English literature, and a modern foreign language and sit examinations at the end of Year 11. In Year 10, students choose three additional GCSE subjects and three in Year 11 for focused learning, with twice the curriculum time. IGCSEs are available in mathematics and languages. Students may apply for Year 11 to prepare for the IB Diploma, which is popular choice for our international students. Five GCSE subjects are needed to qualify for the IB Diploma in Sixth Form.
University Destination:
Boarding and Pastoral Care for students:
There are three amazing boarding houses nestled in the School’s beautiful Lakeland grounds. Windermere boarders always have activities to keep them entertained and stimulated through evening events, lake access, and a varied programme of activities and excursions to both local and national places of interest. The School’s inclusive atmosphere allows for students aged eight and upwards to feel welcome in a distinctive and homely environment. Comfortable dormitories are available in each boarding house, all of which are staffed with full-time residential housemasters and housemistresses.
Extracurricular Activities:
Hodge Howe, the School's watersports centre situated on the shores of Lake Windermere, provides numerous opportunities for pupils during both the School’s timetabled curriculum and as part of the extracurricular activity programme. The centre is an RYA Teaching Centre and is accredited by the British Canoeing Union and the Adventure Activities Licensing Authority.
